Malta Smashes Record With 470,000 Tourists In August

Malta welcomed a record 470,000 tourists in last month marking the busiest month ever for the country’s tourism sector.
This represents an 11.5% increase over August 2024, when arrivals stood at 422,000. Tourists spent a combined €547.6 million during the month, up from €480.5 million the previous year.
On average, each visitor spent €956, a 5.7% rise in per-capita expenditure.
In terms of behaviour and trends over two-thirds (69.3%) of tourists visited Gozo or Comino during their stay. Additionally, some 37.1% of August visitors were aged under 24; another 34.2% were between 25 and 44. Also, the top source markets were Italy, the UK, and France, together comprising 48.5% of all inbound tourists.
The total number of nights spent in Malta rose by 10.5% to 3.5 million nights compared to August 2024. Most of these nights (86.1%) were in rented accommodation. The average length of stay remained stable at 7.4 nights.
Looking at the broader year-to-date picture, in the first eight months of 2025, tourist numbers are up 12%, with total spending exceeding €2.5 billion, an increase of 18.2% over 2024.
Malta International Airport also recorded strong performance in August, handling 1,072,390 passenger movements and achieving a seat load factor of 91.6%, the highest monthly occupancy so far in 2025.
The surge in visitor numbers and spending underscores Malta’s growing appeal as a tourist destination, reflecting effective marketing strategies and sustained demand across key markets.
At the same time, the data reinforce challenges tied to managing growth, balancing visitor influx against infrastructure capacity, community impacts, and long-term sustainability.
