Malta Strengthens Mediterranean Cultural Ties Through COPEAM Partnership

Malta, through Med Media Services Ltd (Med.tv), has secured an additional seat within COPEAM — an international network operating under the auspices of UNESCO, which promotes cultural cooperation and dialogue between Mediterranean countries through the media.
Speaking at the opening of the 32nd COPEAM Conference, taking place in Malta under the theme ‘Bridging divides: the role of cultural cooperation amid global strains’, Minister for National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government, Owen Bonnici, emphasised that in times of geopolitical tensions, building bridges is essential — and culture is a powerful tool to achieve this.

Minister Bonnici also reflected on his recent experience at an informal meeting of EU Culture Ministers in Poland, where discussions focused on how culture can serve as a means of solidarity with Ukraine.
The Minister praised the initiative led by Dr Anton Tabone, which paved the way for Malta to strengthen its position within this important network. He stressed that Malta’s active involvement in COPEAM will further support efforts to promote peace and dialogue in the region. This complements the work already being carried out by Public Broadcasting Services — Malta’s national broadcaster — which is already a COPEAM member.

Minister Bonnici also highlighted the role of the Malta Arts Council, which this year is celebrating its 10th anniversary, as a driving force in promoting creativity and the arts both locally and internationally.
“Malta is a committed and active partner within this network and Med.tv has a crucial role to play in enhancing dialogue and cultural cooperation across the Mediterranean. I believe COPEAM provides an important platform through which we can continue building bridges for peace and prosperity within our region,” concluded Minister Bonnici.
