Malta’s ‘Newbie’ Glenn Micallef May Get The Chop From New EU Commission As Malta Dubbed ‘Loser’ By Politico

Malta has been labelled one of the “losing” countries following the results of the new European Commission, with “newbie” Glenn Micallef being viewed as one of the Commissioners who may get the chop, according to international newspaper Politico.

Micallef, the newly appointed Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness, Youth, Culture and Sport, has been placed in the “losers” category with Hungary, Slovenia, Belgium, and Bulgaria, whose candidates appear as dubious due to their possible involvement in scandals, their questionable past, or their apparent lack of competence or experience.

Politico stated that Malta’s pick turned heads among the Labour Party due to Micallef’s inexperience for such a role, one which is usually filled by a former prime minister or a political heavyweight. The former OPM head of secretariat expressed his honour at the chance to fulfil such a role, though his experience is now being questioned. It will be determined by lawmakers as to whether Micallef’s portfolio is enough for him to carry out the role effectively.

First on Politico’s “losers” list was none other than Micallef, due to his “lack of experience as a minister and short political career”. As a result, a portfolio with “less clout” and “little relevance at the European level” portrayed Micallef as a weak candidate, claimed Politico.

The 35-year-old is also the youngest-appointed Commissioner, and will face interrogation by the MEPs soon enough. Over the coming weeks, MEPs will hold hearings for the 26 commissioners within Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s team.

As history has shown, not all nominated Commissioners will hold their seats, proving it is likely for one or more proposed Commissioners to walk out as ordinary citizens following the hearings.
