The oldest woman on the Maltese islands has graciously aged another year, turning 111 years old today.

Maria Farrugia, originally from the locality of Ħamrun, was born on 7th March 1912 – this means she has lived through a multitude of major events throughout her life.

Malta’s own Maria is also not so far away from the world’s oldest woman, Spain’s Maria Branyas, at 116 years old.

On the day, the People of Malta reshared their post from last year when they had originally spoken with Maria, who had revealed that there’s no real secret to living such a long life, attributing it to God himself.

“Life is in God’s hands. There are no secrets.”

Her own mother lived to be 100 years old, and while she had five siblings, some died young. She even recalls one of her siblings who died at 37 years old from a bomb during one of the first air raids on Malta.

Maria was born in Mosta, grew up in Msida, and went to live in Ħamrun during the war. She was widowed in 1962 and had three children, two of whom have passed away. Her daughter Carmen and her grandson Stephen now take care of her.

She also survived both the Spanish Flu, when she was still young, and the COVID-19 pandemic – two global pandemics within one lifetime.

Happy Birthday, Maria!
