Malta’s Traffic Wardens And Transport Officials To Start Using Speed Guns
Malta’s traffic wardens and transport officials are set to start using speed guns to aid police with their efforts to improve road safety.
Currently, only the police are using speed guns, however, officers from Local Enforcement System Agency (LESA) and Transport Malta (TM) will soon have access to them.
The speed gun is a tool which measures the velocity of the vehicle as it is approaching or driving away and in the case of over speeding a report is issued by the gun itself indicating the speed.
In the past year, over 6,000 speeding drivers were fined by the police, and this number is expected to grow once more officials start utilising the speed guns.
More than 26,000 fines were given this year due to over speeding as speed cameras capture vehicles driving with excessive speed.
The fine for speeding ranges between €35 and €70 and it depends on the difference of speed that the vehicle is moving at to the speed limit.
The highest speed that was registered by traffic police with speed guns was that of 193 km per hour recorded along the Coast Road.
Speaking with Times of Malta, the police informed that the law does not oblige the police to issue a warning that speed monitoring devices will be used at a certain location.
Do you agree that more speed guns should be used around Malta?
