Winners of a new short film prize by the Malta Film Commission have been unveiled, giving three aspiring filmmakers a whopping €100,000 euros to create a 15-minute film.

The group Dyferent, consisting of Dylan Odom, Maria Grech, and Adam Farag were announced as winners at the 1st Golden Bee Awards, part of the lavish Hollywood-style Mediterrane Film Festival.

According to an official press release, there were a total of 26 applications and 10 finalists. However, no names of the finalists were mentioned online.

However, prominence was given to the “distinguished” panel of judges James Nunn, Holly El, Tommy Boulding, and Patrick Fischer.

Applicants for the short film fund were asked to submit a one-page outline, a page document describing their vision, how they would communicate their story, and a basic financial plan. No experience making films was mentioned.

The Mediterrane Film Festival took place last weekend and was a star-studded affair. It includes renowned actors and film crew, a laser show, a live orchestra, and a four-course dinner gala for 800 guests at Fort Manoel.

Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo and Film Commissioner Johann Grech avoided journalist questions on how much the whole affair cost, but allegations say taxpayers footed over €1 million.
