Maltese Passport Hits Its Highest Global Ranking As Fifth Most Powerful

This is the highest-ever ranking for Malta, following last year’s eight-place rank.
This rank is calculated on the basis of how many travel destinations the passport holder is able to access without needing to obtain a visa prior.
The fifth-place ranking for Malta’s passport puts it in a more favourable position than the passports of countries like Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the United States.
France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Singapore, and Spain’s passports ranked as the first most powerful in the world.
Finland, Austria, and the UK’s passports were ranked as the second, third, and fourth most powerful respectively.
It is worth noting that according to the index, the Maltese passport allows its holder a visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to a whopping 190 destinations around the world, which include most of the Americas, Central Europe, Australia, Eastern Europe, and Africa.
The countries whose passport was ranked as the ‘most powerful’ allow their holder access to 194 destinations without a visa.
The lowest-ever the Maltese passport has ranked was in 2010 when the document took the 15th spot.
From 2018 to 2022, the passport managed to secure the seventh-place ranking.
Afghanistan’s passport remains at the bottom of the list since it allows its holders visa-free access to just 28 destinations.
