At just 14, Nathan Tedesco becomes the first Maltese winner to win The Legend of the Tournament Award after taking home the Mathematics Without Borders Tournament Cup in the individual competition three years in a row.

Nathan stated he knew since last year that he was going to win, as the award is given a year after you win the three cups in a row, but he still felt very honoured that he was winning the cups for Malta.

The Mathematics Without Borders competition, organised by Pedagogical Association Education without Borders in Bulgaria, has been running for twelve years. This year’s edition brought together over 800 students from 14 countries, with Malta represented by six participants aged between 12 and 14. Three of the Maltese students won cups in recognition of their performance throughout the year.

Competitors first take part in local tests, with the finals held in Nessebar, Bulgaria.

Miriam Bugeja, an education officer within the Directorate for STEM and VET Programmes, explained that this is the first year the cup was not won by a student from Bulgaria itself.

Bugeja said she is proud of the fact that this Legend of the Tournament Award was given for the first time to a student outside Bulgaria. Stating it naturally had to be a Maltese student who reached this award.

Education Officer within the Directorate for STEM and VET Programmes, Jonathan Mifsud explained that the problems the students have to solve in the competition are not the usual kind

The director of the Directorate for STEM and VET Programmes, Melanie Casha Sammut, said that the competition is also linked to the National Education Strategy, which places the person at the centre. She explained that through these initiatives, the student is encouraged to learn and to continue studying the subjects they love.

This is the ninth time Malta has participated, and once again, Maltese students succeeded in winning medals both in the individual competitions and in the team events.
