Man Claiming To Be Carrying Bomb At Malta Airport Lands Two-Year Conditional Discharge

A man was given a conditional discharge this morning after admitting in court to have claimed that he had a bomb in his bag at the Malta International Airport, which sparked a security alert.
Tommaso Palmieri, a 59-year-old Italian national, was stopped while waiting to board a Ryanair flight as he had not paid to take his hand luggage on board the cabin and had to check it in to be put in the belly of the plane.
After an argument about the amount he had to pay being more than he had been asked to pay in Italy, he eventually agreed to pay the fee.
At the check in desk, an official asked if he had any electronics in the bag, to which he responded, “I have a bomb”.
According to police inspector Roxanne Tabone, Palmieri was arrested on the spot.
In court, the man pleaded guilty and was charged with a two-year conditional discharge.
The case was heard by Magistrate Leonard Caruana, with Inspector Roxanne Tabone leading the prosecution. Lawyer Giannella de Marco represented the accused.
This comes after a similar case which happened two weeks prior, where another Italian tourist claimed to be carrying a bomb, where he was fined €1,200.
