Man Who Dumped Television Into Quarry ‘For Social Media’ To Be Fined By ERA
The man who can be seen dumping a television into a quarry, allegedly for the purposes of social media clout, will be fined by the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA), according to Malta Ranger Unit.
The recently surfaced video that went viral on social media depicts what looks like an old CRT television being thrown in slow motion in a quarry, with the electronic device diminishing to pieces at the fall.
The ERA condemned the “irresponsible behaviour for the purpose of online entertainment” portrayed by individuals in the video. In a social media statement posted by the ERA yesterday, the Authority called the behaviour “deplorable”.
“These actions are detrimental to the environment because this type of waste contains dangerous materials like mercury that can lead to the contamination of groundwater,” ERA said, adding that “it is also detrimental to third parties and portrays a lack of civic responsibility.”
The young man was identified on Wednesday after the Malta Ranger Unit was informed anonymously that bulky waste was being dumped illegally.
A report was immediately filed with the Police’s Environmental Protection Unit (EPU) who along with ERA took swift action to hold the individual portrayed in the video accountable.
