Mater Dei Hospital Achieves Record Number Of Surgeries In 2024

During an event at Mater Dei Hospital, Minister for Health and Active Ageing, Jo Etienne Abela, met with the hospital’s surgical staff, including radiologists, cardiologists, surgeons from various specialisations, anaesthetists, nurses and radiographers.

Accompanied by the hospital’s administrative staff, the minister reiterated the government’s appreciation for their hard work and dedication, which led to a record 62,635 surgeries being performed at the hospital in 2024. Minister Abela explained that there was a 6% (3,812) increase in surgeries compared to the previous year.

During the meeting, several interventions were made by the professionals, where plans and suggestions were discussed for more efficient operations. Minister Jo Etienne Abela encouraged the professionals to engage in more dialogue with colleagues in Primary Care, so that as many conditions as possible could be treated within the community. The minister promised that the digitalisation of services would assist in this regard.

When asked about the expansion of infrastructure at Mater Dei Hospital, the minister reiterated the project to expand the Emergency Department, the Intensive Care Unit, the Radiology Department, the Cardiology Department, as well as the expansion of the obstetrics department and NPICU. He also mentioned new beds and operating theatres in newly developed spaces, with cooperation with the private sector aimed at ensuring timely patient care.

The minister and the administrative staff welcomed various suggestions to improve operations. These included the recruitment of more specialists once they reach retirement age, upgrading surgical equipment, expanding robotic surgery and implementing a more comprehensive appointment system in the Outpatients Department.

“On behalf of the patient and the government, I thank the professionals for their results and this new record. The ministry remains committed to providing all the support needed to achieve even more ambitious goals,” concluded Minister Abela.
