The George Fenech Art Museum and Gallery in Mellieħa is hosting Landscape Interpretations, a special temporary exhibition commemorating the 99th anniversary of the birth of one of Malta’s artistic icons, George Fenech.

Running from 4th to 30th January, this exhibition celebrates the Maltese landscape through the eyes of three renowned local artists: Esprit Barthet (1919-1999), Antoine Camilleri (1922-2005), and Lino Borg (b. 1951).

Much like Fenech, Barthet and Camilleri devoted their lives to teaching and shaping the Maltese art scene, while Lino Borg, a former student of both Barthet and Fenech, adds a personal touch to the exhibition through his close ties to these influential figures.

Landscapes were a subject close to George Fenech’s heart, and this exhibition reflects that passion by showcasing diverse interpretations of Malta’s beauty.

Esprit Barthet is celebrated for his Rooftops series, where he transformed Maltese towns into bold, geometric abstractions.

Antoine Camilleri, known for his deep connection to the Maltese landscape, presents works like St Paul’s Bay—crafted using sand and limestone powder—and Il Foss Valletta, made from clay and resin.

Rare pastel depictions of tugboats from the 1940s further enrich his collection. Lino Borg, inspired by Fenech’s practice of painting on location, captures rural Malta’s vibrancy with expressive brushwork and bold color palettes.

Housed at 42 Triq il-Kbira in Mellieħa, the George Fenech Art Museum offers a stunning glimpse into the artist’s six-decade journey.

This exhibition invites visitors to explore not only the works of Fenech but also those he inspired and mentored.

The exhibition is running from 4th to 30th January, with opening hours on Monday, Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday from 10am to 1pm, and Friday from 4pm to 7pm.
