Men In Malta Earned €158 More Than Women In The Last Quarter Of 2023
Female workers in Malta made €158 less than males between October and December of last year, figures released by the National Statistics Office (NSO) show.
The NSO’s survey for the Malta Labour Office took a deep dive into the workforce, its occupations and gender distributions as well as the salaries attained from the last quarter of 2023.
It found that in every age group analysed, the employment rate for males is higher than that of females. In fact, between October and December of 2023, the average monthly salary for males was €1,905, while that of females was €1,747.
The hours worked per week by both genders were almost identical, though, with males working 1.2 more hours in full-time employment, and females working 1 more hour in part-time employment on average.
The largest gap occurred in the financial and insurance sector, in which women earned almost €600 less than men from October to December. On the other hand, the smallest gap was in the professional, scientific, technical, administration, and support sector, in which women earned €59 less than men.
The stats also revealed that while occupational groups such as ‘craft and related trades workers’, ‘plant and machine operators’, and ‘skilled agricultural, forestry and fishery workers’ are mainly male-dominated, other groups such as ‘clerical support workers’, ‘professionals’ and ‘service and sales workers’ are mainly dominated by females.
Another NSO study related to registered employment exhibits an increase in registered full-time employment since October 2022, with a rise of 8%. While full-time employment for males went up by 8.5%, that for females increased by 7.3%. Part-time employment as a primary job also increased, by a total of 4.3%.
On the whole, out of every 100 people within the 15-64 age cohort, 79 of them were employed.
“The male employment rate for this age bracket was 85.5% while that for females stood at 71.4%. The largest share of employed persons was recorded among persons aged between 25 and 34 years, for both males and females,” stated the report.
