The avid Labour supporter that has been initiating online abuse of a beloved restaurant in Mġarr is a beneficiary of over €2 million in direct orders.

Matthew Bongailas, the owner of Bongailas Construction, received 15 direct orders worth around €2 million from Infrastructure Malta in just a few months back in 2021.

While his company was only officially registered on 15th January 2020, he had already been awarded a considerable amount of direct orders until a year later.

Furthermore, Bongailas seems to have a close relationship with the government, as seen from his Facebook profile, often seen flaunting his relationship with Prime Minister Robert Abela.

He was also one of Abela’s canvassers and counting agents during his leadership race, and is even reportedly close with former Roads Minister Ian Borg.

On Monday, Bongailas was calling out a beloved family restaurant situated in Mġarr, after the owner was spotted at a recent protest demanding the hospitals be returned back to the people.

This came after PN MP and former party leader Adrian Delia’s landmark win of his case against Vitals-Steward, proving the contract to be fraudulent.

“Good to know that’s your thanks to the Prime Minister for keeping your business alive during the pandemic, you should be ashamed of yourself,” Bongailas wrote.

But people immediately started to stand up for the targetted restaurant, with influencer Terry ta’ Bormla uploading a status appealing for people to support them.

“Don’t worry, next weekend I’ll go eat there myself,” PN councillor Sean Gauci wrote.

Since then, PN MP Eve Borg Bonello has also publically registered her support towards the restaurant owner, stating that she looks forward to eating there herself next week.

“This is what happens in an authoritarian state when you stand up to the government. Mafia state,” she wrote.
