Mosta Local Council Candidate Criticises Latest Industrial Additions To Mosta ‘Pjazzetta’
Mosta resident and local council candidate Thomas De Martino took to his Facebook to reveal his disappointment when he found out that the quaint and traditional Brittania Square in his home town of Mosta had been riddled with bollards and red paint.
“This is Brittania Square; a small square in the heart of Mosta’s old quarter,” De Martino wrote, describing the area as “one of the few remaining places in Mosta which still has the traditional Maltese village charm with its narrow roads, dead ends, beautiful old houses”.
To his shock, De Martino found out that this idyllic area in Mosta had undergone some industrial changes.
“Today someone decided to fill the square with bollards and red paint,” he wrote, adding that such changes are unbefitting for such an area.
“It’s not like we are on Regional Road,” De Martino wrote, implying that the zone is not as traffic-dense as the busy Mosta main road.
De Martino informed Lovin Malta that while this stylistic decision has to do with “the changes that are being made in Mosta with regards to the new traffic management plan, these changes are proving to be extremely unpopular” since according to the Mosta resident they have “plagued a good three quarters of Mosta residents”.
The Mosta local council candidate told the newsroom that “apart from the traffic management issue,” his main concern with the new stylistic choices is how they affect the aesthetic of the traditional Maltese square.
De Martino went on to say that the site in question is an Urban Conservation Area which means that “such changes are entirely incongruent with the traditional landscape.”
Just a few minutes after De Martino’s social media post, the Mosta Local Council took to its Facebook page to talk about the latest developments in Brittania square.
“Rest assured that this is just a temporary measure so that we may test the new Traffic Management system,” the post read.
The Mosta local council addressed the individuals who are “preoccupied with the road markings/plastic bollards in Brittania square,” which according to the Local Council was implemented because of the “new traffic management system”.
The local council told worriers that the “once this one way system is tested,” the area will also “be upgraded” in a matter similar to “what was done in the Main Street, with even the possibility of having benches”.
The council also clarified that Brittania square will eventually be adorned with “porfido slabs”, similarly to what was done in Mosta’s Main Street, “together with hard stone bollards”.
