Msida Contractor’s Permit Revoked Over Professional Negligence

Transport Malta, in coordination with the Water Services Corporation, has revoked the permit of a contractor involved in the Msida project due to alleged breaches of professional practices.

The Infrastructure Ministry indicated that the contractor, not yet identified, did not adequately ensure that their work did not impede vehicular traffic, posing potential risks to motorists. As a consequence, the contractor’s work was suspended, and penalties are to be imposed.

In a Facebook post, Aaron Farrugia confirmed the actions taken, mentioning in Maltese the importance of adhering to professional standards.

Following the suspension, Infrastructure Malta stated it would directly handle the project’s completion. While the contractor will change, the project’s set deadlines are intended to remain the same. Times of Malta has previously noted that the project experienced delays, with an earlier deadline of September 2 missed due to weather challenges. The Ix-Xatt Ta’ Xbiex road resurfacing project, valued at €930,000, was originally slated for completion in April. Yet, issues such as traffic congestion from lane reductions have resulted in prolonged completion timelines.

The Ministry clarified that lapses in professional conduct would not be overlooked. In a similar vein, Transport Malta’s CEO, Jonathan Borg, highlighted the agency’s dedication to regulatory compliance and punctuality. Borg emphasized the necessity of considering the public’s convenience during such projects.

Borg commented on the agency’s firm position against undue delays and disruptions for the local community. The incident underscores Transport Malta’s focus on maintaining roadwork standards and contractor accountability. The contractor’s identity is yet to be made public.
