Msida Creek Project Temporary Traffic Changes Effective On 2nd January
The new temporary traffic routes around the Msida Creek Project will come into effect on 2nd January, 2025.
Access from Ta’ Xbiex to Msida Valley will be closed, and a temporary road near the monument will provide direct access from Valletta to Ta’ Xbiex, Gzira and Sliema, Infrastructure Malta announced earlier this week.
It suggested the use of an alternative route from Regional Road or Kappara Junction when travelling from Ta’ Xbiex towards Msida Valley.
IM launched a WhatsApp channel group where real-time traffic diversions will be posted, as well as updates of the project itself.
Construction of the project began last month and will run through to 2027. It will be split into four phases and cause significant changes to commuters’ daily routes.
The Msida Creek Project was surrounded by controversy with many opposing the idea of building a flyover. Msida mayor Charles Selvaggi said that he believed the majority of residents are against plans to build a flyover in the site while the PN councillors within the local council were vocally against it.
In fact, back in June, Kamra tal-Periti proposed a greener alternative to the government’s plans that entirely omits flyover. The Chamber of Architects’ plan envisions converting the busy junction into a 20,000-square-meter park filled with over 2,000 trees.
Despite the objection, IM decided to go ahead with plans to construct a flyover which IM CEO Steve Ellul has assured that all measures have been taken to assure it is a solution, not a problem.
