New Maltese Road Code Introduced With Focus On Safety, Respect, And Youth Education

A new Maltese Road Code was announced along with an educational campaign with emphasis on respect and safety.
“This is an important step towards safer and more accessible for everyone. The quality of life and the safety on the roads should be consistent, even if transport methods change and evolve along the years,” said Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works, Chris Bonett.
The new code includes a number of new additions that clearly reflect the evolution of mobility in Malta. Among the new additions, there are new rules for e-scooters and pedelecs so as to integrate them in our roads in a safer way.
There are also new and improved rules on seatbelt and helmet rules, as well as an extensive guide for new drivers focusing on the negative repercussions that are brought by distractions while driving.
Bonett also announced that together with the new Code, an educational campaign on mobility in Malta will be introduced in schools, in order to nurture a responsible culture in our youth.
“This is a renewed Code, based on the realities of today and the future. As the Authority, we will launch an educational campaign ‘Think Twice’ through which we want to make people out there more aware of the decisions they make while traveling from one place to another,” said Kurt Farrugia, Executive Chief of Transport Malta.
