A national initiative has just been launched to encourage young people across Malta to volunteer in the animal welfare sector.

The programme YVA (Youth Volunteering for Animals), was announced during the Public Service Expo 2025 by Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Animal Rights, Alicia Bugeja Said.

It aims to give young people the chance to get involved in the hands-on care of animals in shelters and centres around the island, while also receiving structured training and support.

“Young people are the future of our country. Today, we are showing that we believe in them and want to see them at the forefront – even in the field of animal welfare,” Bugeja Said said at the launch.

She praised the work already being done by voluntary organisations in the sector, saying that young volunteers bring a new kind of energy that can make a big difference.

“Every time I visit these shelters, I see just how important volunteering is for these animals. The presence of young people with fresh ideas can bring real and beautiful change.”

She also thanked the Director of Animal Welfare, the Commissioner for Animal Welfare, and the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary for supporting the project.
