New National Records Set At Malta Weightlifting Association’s Annual Team Event

New national records were set at this weekend’s annual team event by the Malta Weightlifting Association (MWA).
“The performances we saw today, especially from our youth lifters, are proof that Maltese weightlifting is on the rise. Our new facility will only accelerate this progress,” said MWA’s President, Jesmond Caruana.
The competition was held at the newly inaugurated National Weightlifting Centre within the Marsa Sports Complex. The event drew a strong turnout, particularly from emerging youth talent, underscoring the sport’s rapid growth and development in Malta.
Each lift counted toward overall points, keeping tension high throughout the day.
Tenishia Thornton delivered a flawless six-for-six performance and shattered national records in both the Junior and Senior categories. Thornton set new marks of 91 kilogram in the Snatch, 114 kilogram in the Clean & Jerk, and a 205 kilogram Total.
Aaliyah Gatt raised the bar with new national records: 67 kilogram Snatch and 90 kilogram Clean & Jerk in the Junior category.

Fresh from her bronze medal win at the European Youth Championships, Kim Camilleri Lagana maintained her momentum with lifts of 66 kilogram Snatch and 90kg Clean & Jerk, showing remarkable consistency on the platform.
Top men’s honors went to Rylee Borg, who totalled 272 kilogram for 331 points. He was closely followed by Shaun Ciantar with 265 kilogram (304 points) and Luke Treeby Ward with 224 kilogram (266 points). Noteworthy debuts came from Luke Stefan Micallef (117 kilogram, 260 points) and Nathaniel Fenech (195 kilogram, 252 points).
In the men’s Youth division, Nathan Mifsud impressed with a 180 kilogram total and 286 points, ahead of Nathan Balzan (214 points) and Gabriele Frendo (210 points). The Under-13 girls’ category saw Emily Livori secure first place with 120 points, followed by Mia Sant with 113 points.
According to the results published by the Malta Weightlifting Association, Iron Titans snatched first place with 1,679 points, followed by The Unbreakables with 1,611 points, and PR Warriors secured third place with 1,563 points.
