Mosta Mayor Chris Grech has expressed that while the local council is carrying out inconvenient works which are leading to widespread frustration, “no one had the guts to get this infrastructural work done” before.

Speaking with Lovin Malta during a sit-down interview at the Mosta Local Council, while delving into all the ongoing and prospective projects, Grech expressed that the hardest challenge faced right now is having so many ongoing works that are an inconvenience to residents.

“Mosta is in need of a lot of infrastructural work, and even though we have a lot ongoing right now, there’s still a long way to go,” Grech told Lovin Malta.

“No one had the guts to get this infrastructural work done,” he said.

“Mosta was an infrastructural nightmare,” he continued.

Grech named a number of projects which are ongoing right now, such as the upgrading of the residential road networks, arterial roads, such as the Mosta Bridge, and the introduction of stormwater culverts.

He also went into the prospective projects for the town, such as the construction of a new primary school, the introduction of underground parking under the school, the relocation of the civic centre, and a €1.7 million Project Green project for the area behind the Rotunda Church.

Grech explained how through the grant given of 45,000 square metres of tarmac divided over three years, many residential roads have not even started yet, as the main ones are being prioritised.

He also mentioned a number of roads that have been completed over the last years, such as Triq il-Kbira, and Triq Durumblat.

“Residents are frustrated when they’re waiting for work, but they’re also frustrated when the works are going on,” he expressed.

He also touched upon some residents’ belief that the decisions come directly from the mayor when sometimes they’re simply an implementation of decisions taken by other entities.

“Some people think that you’re doing what you want as a mayor, when really, you’re often implementing decisions that you didn’t make yourself, but we get the blame for implementing it,” he said.

“We’re trying to make the transition as easy as possible, but at the end of the day, we know the residents will be happy once they see the projects finished,” he said.
