17-year-old Maltese fashion model Gayle Colombo has shared a powerful message while commemorating World Down Syndrome day.

Living with the Down Syndrome condition herself, Gayle told Lovin Malta that she wants to show people that just because they have a condition, it doesn’t mean they can’t achieve their goals – and even though it takes her more effort, she can still do what she loves.

“This day is all about showing everyone that having Down Syndrome does not prevent you from achieving your goals,” Gayle told Lovin Malta.

“Parents-to-be do not be afraid of this beautiful journey because our extra chromosome makes us an extraordinary child,” she said.

“As you all know today is World Down Syndrome day, I would like to give a message to all of you,” Gayle said in a reel posted earlier today, asking people to celebrate the day with her today.

“Although I have the condition, I am able to do what I love, but sometimes I need to do a bit more effort.  But I can still do it,” she said.

“Despite having Down Syndrome, I still have rights, hopes and dreams, and goals. If given the chance, I have the potential to contribute to society.”

“Don’t judge someone on just the basis of a diagnosis. You might end up missing their ability, uniqueness, and beauty.”

World Down Syndrome Day is celebrated on 21st March, and this year’s theme asks people to work “with them not for them”.
