A total of 1,102 vehicles were taken off Malta’s roads by the Local Enforcement System Agency (LESA) between January and August 2025.

The highest number of removals occurred in July, with 207 vehicles cleared, followed by 167 in June and 146 in May.

Earlier months also saw consistent action: January and February each recorded 132 removals, April followed with 127, and March accounted for 116. By August, the monthly figure dropped to 75.

Certain localities were more affected than others. Sliema registered the most vehicle removals at 144, followed by St Paul’s Bay with 106 and Gżira with 99. These figures reflect both the density of traffic in these areas and ongoing enforcement efforts.

The increase in vehicle removals comes alongside proposed legal reforms aimed at tightening road safety measures. The government is seeking to amend the Traffic Regulations Ordinance to introduce random roadside alcohol and drug testing, even without reasonable suspicion.

Other proposals include steeper penalties for driving under the influence, the ability to suspend licences before a case concludes, and the removal of suspended sentences in cases where drunk driving results in death.

However, the Opposition and the Insurance Association Malta have voiced concerns that the reforms are too narrowly focused on drink-driving. They argue that reckless driving, in all its forms, should be addressed with equal urgency.
