The Maltese government issued 3,583,847 traffic tickets between 2013 and 2023, collecting €116,187,254 in fines during this period, according to Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri.

Responding to a parliamentary question by Nationalist MP Ivan Bartolo, Minister Camilleri revealed that the total value of citations issued amounted to €133,811,122, with 3,287,066 tickets successfully paid.

However, this still leaves an outstanding balance of €17,623,868.81 in unpaid fines.

Efforts to recover unpaid amounts are ongoing. The Local Enforcement System Agency (LESA) has issued 241 warrants of seizure since 2022, targeting dues dating back as far as 2002.

These warrants, valued at €4,711,563.59, are part of a broader strategy to address long-standing arrears.

The data also highlights a significant increase in traffic fines over the years, with the total value doubling from 2013 to 2022. In 2022 alone, fines issued reached €16,215,744, reflecting a growing focus on enforcement and compliance.

Unpaid fines remain a persistent issue, with some cases still undergoing legal proceedings. Minister Camilleri assured Parliament that the government is committed to recovering these funds and addressing enforcement challenges.
