Over 50% Of The Maltese Population Haven’t Read A Book In 2022

On 9th August, Eurostat published that around 30% of the Maltese population had read less than five books over 2022, just around the EU average.

In commemoration of ‘International Book Lovers Day’, Eurostat posted statistics of how much books the population of each EU member state has read over 2022. Malta was amongst the ones with the least books read, falling behind Latvia and Slovakia. Around 55% of the Maltese population has state that they haven’t read any books during 2022, which is slightly above the EU average which was around 47%. 

The study concluded that the age group that reads the most is the one aged 16-29 with 60.1%, when compared to 30-54 with 53.5%. The results were also split by sex, showing that women (60.5%) in the EU read more books than men (44.5%). This pattern was also observed when comparing the number of books read, with women always having read more.

There are scientific studies that say reading helps with reducing stress, expanding one’s vocabulary, improving concentration skills, better analysis skills, amongst many more. Nowadays, it is relatively easier to read as books are even available in a digital format.
