The Maltese government has announced that over 8,000 new trees were planted in 2024 as part of a series of environmental projects aimed at enhancing green spaces and biodiversity across the islands.

In addition, more than 25,000 shrubs were planted through initiatives led by entities under the Ministry for the Environment, Energy, and Public Cleanliness.

Entities like Project Green, Ambjent Malta, the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA), and GreenServ have focused on creating open spaces for the public while prioritising the planting of indigenous trees to support local biodiversity.

“Today, when we plant a new tree, we are making a tangible investment in the future of our communities,” said Minister for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness Miriam Dalli.

“We are creating cleaner air and a healthier environment. More green spaces translate into a better quality of life and a more attractive country.”

“The collective effort of planting thousands of new trees makes a real difference for our nation and for future generations.”

The ministry also highlighted the opening of 60,000 square meters of green spaces in 2024, including key projects like Spencer Garden in Marsa, Wied Inċita in Ħ’Attard, and Ġnien fuq il-Glażiż in Birgu.
