€13 million worth of cannabis was found hidden in industrial ovens in a container at the Malta Freeport Terminal.

After a two-day operation to retrieve the drugs, 4,300 kilos of Cannabis resin were found embedded within the induction ovens.

The container – which arrived from Morocco and was bound for Tripoli – was scanned following a risk assessment.

This full process involved the Customs canine teams, a team from the Police Drugs Squad and members from the Civil Protection Department, Customs said in a statement.

The initial scan showed significant inconsistencies and subsequent scans made it clear that irregular material was being held in the ovens.

“This was a remarkable find not only because the quantity was considerable – even on an international scale – but also because the structures were ingeniously built to distract and mislead the authorities,” Customs explained.

Meanwhile, just last week, Customs intercepted 50 kilos of cocaine from a container originating from Ecuador en route to Slovenia.

Duty magistrates were informed of both cases and inquiries have been appointed.
