Owen Bonnici Slams Opposition’s Walkout: “We Will Not Be Intimidated”

Minister Owen Bonnici delivered a strong rebuttal against the Opposition, denouncing what he described as bullying tactics and cowardice. He criticised the Nationalist Party for walking out of Parliament instead of engaging in meaningful debate, arguing that a responsible Opposition would stay and discuss matters rather than evade accountability.

Bonnici maintained that the Labour government refuses to be intimidated by these actions and remains committed to serving the Maltese and Gozitan people.

Bonnici also drew historical comparisons, questioning whether past esteemed Nationalist politicians such as Guido de Marco, George Bonello Du Puis and Ċensu Tabone would have behaved in the manner that Karol Aquilina did. He condemned what he described as dishonourable actions, lamenting that certain members of the Opposition have failed to learn from past mistakes. According to him, some within the Nationalist Party privately condemned these behaviours, yet the party as a whole remains unchanged, which he sees as a disservice to Malta’s democracy.

Addressing personal attacks against members of Parliament, Bonnici remarked that many within the Chamber have experienced hostility from an extremist faction. He highlighted that Speaker Anġlu Farrugia was among those targeted. Despite these challenges, Bonnici asserted that the government stands firm, committed to exposing falsehoods and holding individuals accountable for their actions.

He pointed out that figures such as Karol Aquilina and Jason Azzopardi have never acknowledged wrongdoing or apologised for their actions. According to Bonnici, the electorate has already delivered its verdict, rejecting vindictive politics in the last general election.

Finally, Bonnici criticised Bernard Grech’s leadership, describing it as weak and ineffective. He argued that Grech is entirely absent and has been overshadowed by a de facto leader who now dictates the party’s direction. Bonnici praised Speaker Anġlu Farrugia’s dedication and integrity, stating that he will not be deterred by baseless attacks. The government, he affirmed, remains appreciative of Farrugia’s work and fully supports his commitment to upholding the dignity of Malta’s highest institution.
