PAC Hearing Adjourned After Keith Schembri Refuses To Answer Questions In Light Of Ongoing Investigation

Yet another Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee hearing was adjourned after the former chief of staff Keith Schembri refused to answer questions.

This comes after one of Schembri’s lawyers, Edward Gatt, asked PAC Chairman Darren Carrabot about the criminal report on perjury which was filed following last week’s sitting.

On Tuesday, the former Chief of Staff appeared in front of the PAC committee, and during his testimony, he alleged that both Former Finance Minister Edward Scicluna and ex-police commissioner Silvio Valletta lied under oath during the inquiry into Daphne Caruana Galizia’s murder.

While his lawyer requested the suspension of his client’s testimony until the police investigation is finalised, none of the PAC members took up the request – including, of course, Labour MPs.

As a result, Schembri is now planning to file a constitutional case that would grant his suspension from the PAC until the investigation is finalised, telling the committee that it will be filed in the next two days.

After a number of suspensions throughout today’s hearing, Schembri’s lawyers made it clear to the committee that he will not be answering any more questions.

While Carabott attempted to go forward with the questions, Schembri followed through with his lawyers’ order.

The committee hearing was then adjourned until a ruling from the Speaker on Schembri’s lack of cooperation with the PAC is delivered.
