Placards Demanding Justice For Malta’s Domestic Violence Victims Hung Outside Home Affairs Ministry

Activists hung placards on the facade of the Home Affairs Ministry earlier this morning, demanding justice for all domestic violence cases.

This comes just two days before a protest planned for Women’s Day being held this Wednesday, being organised by Moviment Graffitti, together with MGRM, Doctors for Choice, Women’s Rights Foundation, and Young Progressive Beings.

The placards showed victims of domestic violence last year as well as signs that read ‘We’re sick and tired’ and ‘Justice delayed is justice denied’.

“Over the years, we have seen pathetic police inaction which could have prevented serious crimes such as domestic violence and femicide, lack of information and lack of coordination, as in the case of Bernice Cilia,” Moviment Graffitti said in a statement.

“Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri and Justice Minister Jonathan Attard have repeatedly promised to implement the right reforms and increase resources, but have failed to deliver.”

“It is clear: our justice system is actually an unjust system for women.”

“The theme for this year’s protest, held on International Women’s Day, is Women United Against Injustice (Nisa Magħqudin għax mill-Ġustizzja Mċaħħdin).”

The theme was chosen after witnessing several injustices that women in our society face every day, especially when they seek justice through our institutions.

“Over the past months alone, we have seen senseless sentences and long years of waiting for action to be taken or for justice to be served – such as in the case of Sion Grech. We have also seen instances of victim blaming, such as the baseless lies in the case of Andrea Prudente.”

The protest march will be held this Wednesday, 8th March at 5.30 pm.

“We will be meeting near the Triton Fountain in Floriana where we will start our protest march to voice our anger at these institutions which are supposed to protect us and to demand that our voices are heard and justice served. The march will end in front of the law courts,” it said.

The march is endorsed by the following organisations: aditus, Malta Women’s Lobby, Merħba Bik, Women for Women, YMCA, Migrant Women Association Malta, Integra, ARC, IVY, Dance Beyond Borders, Allejanza Kontra l-Faqar, MAWB, Men Against Violence, and Għajjejt u Xbajt.
