Malta’s police arrested a man for hanging a protest calling for justice for 20-year-old construction victim JeanPaul Sofia in front of parliament yesterday evening.

On Monday, a man, who appears to be one of Sofia’s friends, hung a poster with the words ‘Justice For JeanPaul Sofia’ painted in black, exactly opposite the parliament building in Valletta.

Shortly after, police were seen approaching and detaining the man, before escorting him from the scene.

It has been widely reported that Sofia’s 24-year-old friend, who was spotted wearing a maroon hoodie, was arrested without having a lawyer present with him.

PN MP Eve Borg Bonello was one of the first to react to the incident, pledging solidarity with the arrested man, and comparing Malta to North Korea.

“We arrest innocent people for protesting peacefully as they do in North Korea,” Borg Bonello wrote on social media.

While Sofia’s death happened months ago, no advancements have been made in the investigation, and a public inquiry still has not been opened, despite Sofia’s mother desperately pleading for one to be launched.

Moreover, the site of the accident was suspiciously demolished last week, with many arguing that this is an act of destroying possible evidence and obstruction of justice.
