‘Preventable Tragedies’: Maltese NGO Calls For Implementation Of New Safety Measures On The Road

A Maltese NGO, Doctors for Road Safety (D4RS) has issued a statement calling for the government to implement new safety measures to prevent accidents.
“D4RS is devastated by the senseless death of a 42-year-old father of three, allegedly killed by a 17-year-old driver who fled the scene. This is the 18th road fatality of 2025 – eighteen families torn apart by preventable tragedies. We cannot continue to accept these losses as inevitable when proven solutions exist,” wrote D4RS on Facebook.
The NGO went on to say that it cannot continue to accept these losses as “inevitable when proven solutions exist.” It also remarked how these deaths are labelled as “accidents” when in reality they are the predictable result of inadequate road safety measures.
Three measures were proposed by the NGO to the government to help make our roads and driving safer:
- Immediate roadside, random alcohol and drug testing
- Ongoing 24/7, conspicuous police enforcement on our roads, including road-blocks with random stop checks to act as deterrent for those who want to break the law knowingly.
- Implementation of the Vision Zero approach which is a comprehensive system looking at all aspects of road safety.
D4RS finished their statement by saying how the above are not radical proposals and how they can serve the community locally as they have successfully done so worldwide.
“The father who died today, and the 17 others before him this year, deserves justice through action. Their families deserve a guarantee that no stone is left unturned so that no other family will endure this preventable heartbreak.”
What do you make of the measures proposed?
