A 42-year-old prison inmate was taken to hospital earlier this morning after attempting to inflict self-harm.

This was reported by other people in the same division soon after the incident that happened at 8.38am.

The inmate was then given first aid by a medical team before being rushed to Mater Dei by ambulance.

The person had been inside the Correctional Services Agency for a few weeks leading up to the incident. They received medical help just two days ago while speaking with a psychologist, a statement by the government reads.

A police report was filed by the agency and a magisterial inquiry has been appointed.
