The Chadwick Lakes project has been completed following an investment of €3 million, restoring the 200-metre road which connects Mtarfa to Mosta.

The works involved reinforcing the basin walls and reconstructing part of the main road, which had collapsed due to storm damage.

Funded by the Energy and Water Agency in collaboration with Infrastructure Malta, the project was coordinated by the Infrastructure and Environment Ministry. The newly rebuilt road is crucial for farmers and families who visit the valley to enjoy its natural environment.

At the inauguration, Environment Minister Miriam Dalli emphasised the importance of balancing infrastructure improvements with environmental preservation. “Through this project, we are strengthening infrastructure while protecting our country’s natural heritage. The common good is our absolute priority.”

Designed to accommodate all types of traffic, the road can now support heavy vehicles, including water bowsers used for irrigation.

To prevent future collapses, engineers reinforced the road with anchoring piles, creating a stronger foundation. Valley embankments have also been strengthened to mitigate erosion risks.

Meanwhile, Infrastructure Minister Chris Bonett highlighted the project’s significance, stating, “This investment not only restores access and safety but also enhances our natural environment.”

The works have also re-established water storage in the basin — the largest of its kind in Malta, with a capacity of 35 million litres.

The project complements the upper valley restoration, which includes a two-kilometre walking trail visited by over 9,200 people in 2024.

Architects explained that due to the valley’s geology, the works were phased to ensure safe access for machinery and workers. While concrete and iron structures were used to stabilise the area, the design incorporates limestone blocks to maintain the valley’s natural aesthetics.

The project was completed by reinstalling the railing separating the road from the basin, further enhancing the area’s surroundings.
