Rent Law Amendments To Limit Number Of Tenants In Shared Accommodation, Housing Minister Says

Landlords will soon face restrictions on the number of tenants they can house, as part of the government’s effort to tackle overcrowding in shared living spaces.

Housing Minister Roderick Galdes told the Times of Malta that revisions to the rental legislation are in the pipeline, including the introduction of rental accommodation inspections.

Under the revised legislation, housing officials will have the authority to deny registration to landlords who have a history of tenant mistreatment.

Just last month, Galdes had stated that rental laws would be overhauled to halt “human rights violations” and to reinforce the Housing Authority’s (HA) ability to perform inspections.

Nonetheless, details from Galdes were sparse. The government has not yet disclosed the method it will use to cap tenant numbers, nor the specifics of how and when inspections will take place.

Galdes indicated that the proposed legal modifications are set to be brought to parliament in the upcoming weeks.
