Roberta Metsola Awarded Honorary Doctorate by Łódź University of Technology
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola was awarded an honorary doctorate by Łódź University of Technology on Friday, where she called on Europe to “rediscover the words ‘be not afraid,’” emphasizing the importance of courage amid ongoing global conflicts and rapid change.
In her acceptance speech, the 46-year-old leader referenced the phrase popularized by Pope John Paul II as embodying “the spirit of hope Europe needs today.” She acknowledged the immense challenges facing the continent, pointing to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine and the recent Middle East conflict.
“Nobody was ready for 24 February 2022,” Metsola said, adding, “Ukraine’s fight against brutal tyranny is our fight.” Addressing the situations in Gaza and Iran, she urged all parties to seek de-escalation, call for a ceasefire, ensure the release of hostages, and work towards “security for Israel alongside a future for Palestine.”

The honorary degree citation commended Metsola for her unwavering support of European Union unity. Reflecting on Poland’s transformative journey since joining the EU, she remarked, “Europe can change lives,” while also cautioning that many citizens still feel overlooked. “We must prove Europe keeps its promises every day,” she added.
Metsola also advocated for increased defense spending, noting Poland’s leadership in pushing NATO allies toward a target of 5% of GDP. She stressed the need for Europe to reduce bureaucratic hurdles, attract investment, and develop a skilled workforce to maintain its technological edge
Addressing students, Metsola highlighted Europe’s strength in knowledge: “You are educating the engineers and scientists of tomorrow.”
Founded 80 years ago, Łódź University of Technology is the first Polish institution to bestow an honorary doctorate upon Metsola. She has previously received similar honours from universities in Lisbon and Kyiv.
