At CORE Platform’s first exclusive event for Malta Diversity & Inclusion Charter Signatories held at the Archbishop’s Curia in Floriana, EP President Roberta Metsola emphasised the need for greater diversity and gender balance in leadership roles.
Speaking on the theme “Women on Boards,” she acknowledged the challenges of gender inequality in corporate governance and reiterated the EU’s commitment to inclusivity.
Metsola highlighted the importance of the EU Directive on women in leadership, which targets 40% female representation in non-executive director roles by 2026 for private listed companies across Europe.
CORE President Helga Ellul welcomed attendees, stressing the value of inclusivity and gender balance in fostering innovation, improving performance, and strengthening company culture. She highlighted how diverse boards better reflect their stakeholders and drive long-term sustainability.
Ellul also thanked the European Parliament Liaison Office in Malta and the Archdiocese of Malta for their support, emphasising CORE’s commitment to advancing diversity in Malta’s professional landscape.
The event included contributions from Martins Zemitis, Head of the European Parliament Liaison Office in Riga, who shared inspiring stories of female leaders, including Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa.
A video by Dr. Roberta Lepre, Europe Direct CORE Platform Manager, expanded on the broader implications of the EU Directive. Elaine Cordina from the European Parliament Liaison Office in Malta invited attendees to future events promoting female advancement, including a December 9th celebration.
Interactive discussions addressed key challenges for women in leadership, such as legal responsibilities, accessibility, and the cultural shifts needed to break barriers.
Guests also enjoyed a guided historical tour of the Curia, led by Rev. Fr. Nicholas Joseph Doublet, exploring the venue’s rich history and artistic treasures. The event marked a significant step in fostering inclusivity and empowering women across all levels of governance.
