Watch: Roles Are Reversed – Marsaxlokk’s Tradition Sees Parish Feast Statue Carried By Women
The traditional roles in the Maltese parish feasts seem to have been reversed in Marsaxlokk, with a group of women having carried the statue of Our Lady of Pompeii last weekend.
Fishermen’s wives commit to carrying the statue themselves, as a thanks to Our Lady of Pompeii for protecting their husbands at sea, a tradition not so common within other Maltese and Gozitan parish feasts.

Moira Muscat, who has been working with the parish church for 30 years, stated that the women are highly dedicated to such a tradition.
“It is something I admire a lot, and it isn’t something you see everyday,” she said.
Most of the women are over the age of 65, she added, and it is more or less the same group of women who commit to such a task each year.
“Even though they aren’t young, they are committed and do it every year,” Moira added.
The tradition has now become more popular, with people from various localities attending to watch the procession.
