Rota Launches Memorial Project Remembering Those Who Lost Their Lives On Malta’s Roads

Local environmental NGO Rota has just launched a road victims memorial project in memory of all the people that lost their lives on Malta’s roads.

This comes as Malta has already seen three road-related deaths following fatal traffic accidents in the first month and a half of 2023, following a record year.

“The first goal of this project is to remember the people who have died as a result of traffic accidents, and the second is to shed light on the situation for the government to act quickly,” Rota said on social media.

Another part of the project involves mapping of these road accidents over time – the map can be found at the bottom of the memorial page.

“We believe each victim is more than a number on a national statistics table or a headline in a newspaper. These victims were people with families, dreams, and ambitions who had their lives tragically cut short on the road.”

“Whether by car, motorbike, on foot, or by bicycle, everyone has the right to arrive back home safely.”

The NGO continued to explain how Malta’s roads have become a source of constant fear and danger for citizens – and the situation only seems to be getting worse.

“Much of the current road infrastructure in Malta is inadequate and dangerous. This, combined with the lack of consistent enforcement, creates an environment where accidents are almost inevitable,” it said.

“The high number of road deaths on Maltese roads is a result of the systemic failure of legislation, enforcement, and infrastructure.”

It called upon the government to take swift action to address the issue, and ensure the safety of all road users, be it cyclists or pedestrians.

“This can be achieved by imposing strict penalties on dangerous driving behaviour, legislation protecting more vulnerable users, improving enforcement mechanisms, and investing in developing safer road infrastructure that is safe by design.”

“Only by taking these steps can we hope to reduce the number of road deaths on Maltese roads and create a safer environment for all.”
