Rural Watchtower To Be Dismantled By Planning Authority

NGOs have expressed their disappointment at the Planning Authority after the entity gave the go-ahead for this piece of our heritage to be dismantled and moved to make way for a new road in Marsaxlokk which will link Triq Lepanto and Triq il-Kavallerizza.

NGOs have been opposing the planning application that was originally filed in 2020. Then group of NGOs includes Marsaxlokk Heritage, Nature Trust–FEE Malta, Din l-Art Ħelwa, Moviment Graffitti, Il-Kollettiv, Flimkien Għal Ambjent Aħjar, Friends of the Earth Malta, Wirt iż-Żejtun, and the Archaeological Society Malta who stated that these plans are “an extreme measure that is both unjustified and irreversible”

Although the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage concluded that the site’s use as a rural watchtower could not be completely confirmed, the NGOs insisted that “Dismantling and relocating the Knights-era watchtower, or ‘barumbara’, will cause irreversible damage and erode its historical integrity,”
