Save The Valletta Skyline Restoration Appeal Raises Over €6.8 Million
The Save the Valletta Skyline Appeal is close to reaching its goal of €8 million needed to restore the iconic St Paul’s Anglican Pro-Cathedral.
The Appeal has already raised around €6.8 million, with €2.5 million from private donors and global fundraising efforts, €4.2 million via an EU grant, and €53,000 from the National Development and Social Fund (NDSF).
The project aims to complete the restoration work by late summer this year.
The Appeal aims to save the tower and spire of St Paul’s Anglican Pro-Cathedral, a key feature of Valletta’s iconic skyline, and one of few examples in Malta of the work of William Scamp. Listed on the National Inventory of the Cultural Property of the Maltese Islands, the cathedral is an essential part of Malta’s cultural heritage.
Architectural inspections revealed severe issues with the belltower, spire, and stonework, prompting a group of Maltese and foreign residents passionate about preserving Malta’s heritage to launch the Appeal.
Sir Martin Laing, Chairman of the Save the Valletta Skyline Appeal, expressed gratitude for the support the Appeal has received from around the world.
The Appeal has garnered the attention and contributions of notable figures, including Sir Cameron Mackintosh, James Holland, Claire Francis, Surgeon Rear Admiral Lionel Jarvis, and Sir Max Hastings, as well as members of the British Royal Family.
An event held last month continued the fundraising efforts, with maritime archaeologist Prof Timmy Gambin presenting on the World War II Royal Navy submarine HMS Urge on the 81st anniversary of its sinking.
Do you think Malta should have more of these kinds of initiatives?
