Sedqa To Take Over Harm Reduction At ARUC: ReLeaf Malta Raises Alarm

ReLeaf Malta has claimed Sedqa will be taking over responsibility for harm reduction policies under the ARUC – Authority for the Responsible Use of Cannabis, with the organisation raising alarms.

The move has drawn criticism from cannabis harm reduction associations (CHRAs) and ReLeaf Malta, who describe it as a matter of “grave concern.”

In a statement, ReLeaf Malta expressed strong opposition, highlighting Sedqa’s “draconian approach and lack of evidence-based and human rights practices in their educational approach.”

The organisation is fearing this shift may undermine Malta’s cannabis reform efforts and question the rationale behind the decision.

“This is of grave concern, especially due to Sedqa’s draconian approach,” ReLeaf Malta stated, adding, “what happened to the harm reduction department within the ARUC?”

ReLeaf Malta has called on ARUC to provide transparency, demanding “a reasoned explanation and financial breakdown on how this change will benefit cannabis consumers.”

They stress the importance of protecting harm reduction policies that prioritise evidence-based and consumer-focused approaches.

Harm reduction for cannabis focuses on minimising risks associated with its use by promoting safer consumption methods, regulated access, and education about responsible use. It prioritises public health and safety without stigmatising users or enforcing punitive measures.
