Sharp Rise In Boat Accidents Prompts Safety Concerns In Maltese Waters

Recent insurance data reveals that boat collisions have more than doubled in the past two years.
The number of collisions at sea has risen from 17 to 41 according to a statement made by the Insurance Association of Malta (IAM). In the same report, there were 20 recorded instances of boats sinking.
According to the association, onboard fire and theft incidents were comparable to those from prior years, with nine fires and twelve thefts reported last year. There were about 216 reports of “other damage.”
According to a representative of the group, the number of boats in Maltese waterways has grown “exponentially” over time.
“The data demonstrates that incidents within Maltese waters accounted for 96% of claims, underscoring the fact that marine insurance is not only a legal necessity but also provides protection for the boat owner, passengers, and other seafarers in the event of an emergency.”
“Proper enforcement at sea and that deterrents are in place to guard against abusive practices like intoxication through drink and drugs,” the official emphasised.
A spokesperson for IAM emphasised on the crucial “enforcement at sea and that deterrents are in place to guard against abusive practices like intoxication through drink and drugs”, due to the fact that 96% of claims were related to incidents within Maltese waters.
