‘Solidarity With Mark Camilleri,’ Repubblika President Pledges After Rosianne Cutajar Asks Criminal Court To Intervene

Repubblika President Robert Aquilina has issued a statement of solidarity with author and former book council chair Mark Camilleri.

This comes after Rosianne Cutajar sent a letter to the Attorney General and the Criminal Court, asking them to intervene, after Camilleri leaked messages between Cutajar and murder suspect Yorgen Fenech.

The messages revealed a certain level of intimacy between the two, both on a professional and a personal level.

“Solidarity with Mark Camilleri. Now they will throw the journalists in jail because they expose the atrocities they committed?” Aquilina wrote on social media.

“Will Angelo Gafa’ and Victoria Buttieġieġ become accomplices in this obscenity? If Mark Camilleri is arrested we would have reached a new low,” he lamented.

“Maltese people of goodwill will not stand idly by,” he assured.

The chats in question date from June to September 2019, a few months before Fenech was arrested and charged with Daphne Caruana Galizia’s murder.

In a letter to the AG and the criminal court, Cutajar’s lawyers are now asking them to intervene and take action against Camilleri, for publishing the sensitive content.

Cutajar has also stated that she is considering taking action against Camilleri for breaching her rights to private life.

In the letter, it is stated that there is a possibility that the chats had been taken from the acts of the criminal proceedings in the name of The Republic of Malta against Yorgen Fenech.

Cutajar is arguing that this could breach the court-imposed prohibition of publishing content from Fenech’s phone, back in 2021.

A request was also made to the Commissioner of Police to investigate Camilleri for leaking the messages. If found guilty of contempt of court, Camilleri could face a month’s worth of imprisonment and a fine of around €2,000.
