STMicroelectronics Malta recently marked this year’s Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Week with a significant beach clean-up initiative at Marsaskala’s Munxar area, reinforcing its commitment to environmental stewardship. Thirty employees, including the General Manager, took part in the activity, which focused on removing waste from the beach and coastal path, ensuring the protection of the local ecosystem.

Armed with gloves, bags and other cleaning tools, the team collected 10 bags of waste, along with several heavy objects, contributing to the preservation of Marsaskala’s natural beauty. The clean-up, part of STMicroelectronics’ ongoing efforts to promote environmental sustainability, highlighted the importance of community involvement in tackling local environmental challenges.

“Our employees are passionate about making a difference, not only within our company but in the wider community,” said Dr. Laurent Filipozzi, General Manager at STMicroelectronics Malta. “Through initiatives like the Marsaskala beach clean-up, we are taking tangible steps to protect the environment and contribute to a cleaner, greener future.”

The beach clean-up was just one of several key activities organised during EHS Week, which aimed to raise awareness of the importance of environmental responsibility, as well as health and safety in the workplace. Employees also participated in educational sessions on environmental conservation and workplace safety.

Audrey Zammit and Dr. Adam Gauci from University of Malta delivered an insightful talk on marine biodiversity, microplastic pollution and strategies to protect local ecosystems, further empowering ST employees to make informed decisions that benefit the planet.

Commitment to Sustainability

ST has had a manufacturing presence in Malta for 42 years fulfilling the critical role of assembly and testing of final semiconductor products before they are sent to customers across the world. Many of these chips enable smarter and more energy efficient solutions through electrification and digitalisation including for example, electric vehicles, smart factories and data centers, helping to create a more efficient, sustainable future.

To meet the demand for these chips, ST is taking meaningful, measurable steps toward more sustainable product designs and manufacturing processes.  The company aims to become carbon neutral for scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2027, having already reduced these emissions by 45% compared to 2018 levels. In 2023, 78.74% of the electricity used by STMicroelectronics in Malta came from renewable energy, with the company targeting 100% renewable energy by 2027. In addition, the company has achieved a waste recycling rate of 76.7% and is continually working to reduce its landfill waste, as part of ensuring that ST’s success in Malta is sustainable.
