Student Organisation Research Reveals Nearly 1,300 Increase In Student Parking Permits Since 2018
Student parking permits are on the rise, and have increased by 1,276, according to student organisation MKSA.
As part of their ‘Earth Month’, MKSA is now focusing on an issue which directly affects students at the University of Malta, parking and traffic.
Through analysing data provided by KSU, MKSA found the amount of student drivers has increased quite drastically within the past six years.
They compared the current data to a study carried out by KSU themselves in 2018, and found that 20% of students holding a parking permit live within a 2km radius of the university, in areas such as Msida, San Ġwann, Kappara, Ħamrun, Floriana, Santa Venera, Pieta’, Ta’ Xbiex, Birkirkara, Sliema and Gżira.
They also found that the localities with the most issued student parking permits are Birkirkara and Mosta, with a total of 415 and 403 student drivers respectively.
It is for this reason that their bicycle bus, in collaboration with Steve Zammit Lupi and nine other student organisations, will start in Mosta, pass through Birkirkara and end at the university.
Their event will be taking place on 10th April, and is encouraging students to “ditch their cars and cycle to university”. They will also be providing bicycles to students who don’t own one, free of charge.
