A group of law students have been doing more than just organising parties and preparing for exams, with some in particular having raised thousands for l-Istrina and Puttinu Cares within the past three years, and will do so for the third consecutive Istrina telethon.

The idea stemmed from a law student group chat three years ago, when mature student Mariella Scerri came up with the idea of collectively raising money among the faculty students as well as their friends. Their first collection amounted to a total of €5,000 euro.

By the time the Puttinu Cares telethon came about, the students had formed a committee of three in order to properly organise events, promote the cause, and keep the efforts high.

Their events included bake sales, ‘wear red’ campaigns, and football charity matches – which ended up raising the most money through their team ‘Stralc’.Another €5,000 euro was raised from the Puttinu Cares telethon, €6,000 for l-Istrina ‘23, and €6,000 for Puttinu ‘24, amounting to a total of €22,000 raised for charity.

“This year was the most challenging of them all since most of us were on Erasmus and weren’t stationed in Malta, so it was a bit tougher. We were a bit unsure on whether to go through with it or not,  but people kept asking us about it, so we decided to go ahead with it nonetheless,” stated Thomas Sciberras Herrera, fourth year law student.

Sciberras Herrera, together with committee members George Borg and Saskia Cassingena, has managed to raise such funds through the sense of community among law students and their friends, something they stressed upon greatly.

“We do it because we feel there’s a vacuum when it comes to student societies and philanthropy because no one really watches mainstream TV anymore. By creating an online campaign and creating these fun events, we can bring students closer to these charities. It is also highly motivating and inspiring to be approached by people whose family members these donations may be benefiting. The sense of community is really highlighted in times like these, and it really is beautiful,” stated Sciberras Herrera when asked about the purpose behind it all.

They’re currently at the €4,000 mark, and plan to reach €5,000 by midnight.
