The Minister for National Heritage, Arts, and Local Government, Owen Bonnici, has announced the results of the ‘Screen Support Scheme’, now administered for the first time by the Malta Arts Council.

The scheme has seen investment in local productions rise to €1 million, distributed across key sectors. An intensive research and consultation process preceded the scheme’s launch to identify areas requiring immediate support.

The initiative aims to facilitate the creation of projects for theatrical release, festivals and broadcast (including VOD/SVOD platforms), contributing meaningfully to creative and cultural expression while adhering to international standards. Eligible projects include animation, documentaries and cultural programming.

Funding spans scriptwriting, development, and production phases for short films, feature films and cultural programmes. Out of 58 eligible applications from independent audiovisual entities, 23 projects will receive funding.

“Indigenous film is an essential part of the creative sectors and this scheme, restructured under the Malta Arts Council, underscores its importance. This government listens to the sector and views this scheme as an opportunity to strengthen cultural and creative industries,” said Minister Bonnici.

He highlighted ongoing collaboration with stakeholders to refine the scheme’s mechanisms and announced that the budget allocation for 2025 will increase to €2 million. “We will continue supporting this sector to ensure its growth and success,” he concluded.

Mary Ann Cauchi, Chief Operating Officer for Funds and Strategy at the Malta Arts Council, emphasised the scheme’s core pillars. “The Council has always prioritised safeguarding the dynamic development of our cultural identity while fostering a sustainable creative economy. This includes strengthening the indigenous film sector through this scheme. We’re also introducing mentorship opportunities to support newcomers to the industry, aligning with our national strategy.”
