‘The Best Conditions Our Nurses Ever Had’: Two Agreements Signed To Ensure Better Pay And Conditions For Malta’s Health Workers
A new agreement has been sealed regarding thousands of health sector workers – namely nurses, carers and ECG technicians – who are set to receive better pay and conditions.
The development comes after the signing of two sectoral agreements, one for nurses and carers and another for ECG technicians.
Prime Minister Robert Abela visited the nurses after the signing of these agreements saying that “the health sector is one of the most crucial areas for the country and its people.”
“Hence, the country must persist in expanding the economy to subsequently reinvest the generated wealth back into the most vital sectors,” he stated.
Abela also expressed the government’s aspiration to see more youth opt for a career in nursing, saying that the sacrifices “in studies and work should lead to a career that, apart from offering satisfaction, also contributes to a better quality of life. This agreement seeks to fortify this profession and regard it as a progressing career.”
He explained that these agreements will provide “the best conditions our nurses ever had.”
The PM was accompanied to the signing by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health, Chris Fearne, and Minister for Active Ageing, Jo Etienne Abela.
Also present was the President of the Malta Union for Midwives and Nurses (MUMN), Paul Pace. He expressed his views on how the agreement would result in more motivated nurses and carers, recognising that there is “a shortage of nurses everywhere.”
“However, here in Malta, we not only recognised the problem, but more importantly, we worked together to encourage more youths to choose this profession as their career, and introduced incentives to retain nurses and carers in employment, especially the younger ones.”
