Local activist group, Young Progressive Beings (YPB), laid a bed outside of Castille symbolising the murder of Sandra Ramirez, as well as the “intimate spaces where many of these crimes have taken place” and the trusted people who became callous perpetrators.

The installation also features the names of women who have been killed in Malta, “to shine a light on the victims of femicide” on the island, the group’s social media post reads.

“We call on the government of Malta to prioritise the prevention of intimate partner violence and domestic violence, and bring the men who killed them to justice.”

“Femicide is preventable. NOT ONE MORE.”

Sandra was found lifeless on her bed and punctured with multiple stab wounds early Sunday morning after her ex-partner gave himself in to the police for killing the 43-year-old Colombian woman.

Fabian Eliuth Garcia, a man who shared both her age and nationality, pleaded not guilty to the murder that occurred in a Sliema residence.

Arraigned before Magistrate Elaine Rizzo, Garcia is being represented by legal aid lawyer Julia Micallef Stafrace. As reported by TVM News, Inspector Wayne Camilleri informed the court that around 6.15am, Garcia went to the Sliema police station and with his phone used an application to translate from Spanish to English.

Among the victims listed on the installation are Meryem Bugeja, Christine Sammut, Karen Cheatle, Vanessa Grech, Margaret Mifsud, Pauline Tanti, Eleanor Mangion, and Pelin Kaya who was killed in the early hours of her birthday a year ago tomorrow.

On the application, it was written “ I murdered my ex-partner in an argument inside my home.” Garcia also wrote the address of the apartment and gave the police a key where they found Ramirez with multiple stab wounds.

The Magistrate ordered for Garcia to remain detained.

Do you think that Maltese authorities do not prioritise intimate partner violence enough?
